Classification: Antidotes, Detoxifying Agents & Drugs Used in Substance Dependence Mechanism: 1. Acetylcysteine may decrease the viscosity of secretions by splitting of disulphide bonds in mucoproteins. 2. It also promotes the detoxification of an intermediate paracetamol metabolite which is used in the management of paracetamol overdosage. Dosage: 1. Dilute in 5% glucose or physiological solution. 2. Dosage: (1). Adult: Initially 150 mg/kg in 60 mins ie 200 mL of diluted Hidonac solution. (2). Children: Initially 150 mg/kg in 60 mins ie 50 mL of diluted Hidonac solution. 3. Followed by 50 mg/kg 4 hourly. 4. Total duration: 72 hr. Adverse Reaction: Urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm, nausea, vomiting, hypertension, tachycardia, dizziness & fever.
